Luis very much embodies the spirit of irreverence and imagination that the Bairrada needs to face its future. With a degree in Chemistry, Luis began his winemaking career after the 1974 Revolution. This mix of science and revolution always underlines his innovation and dynamism, even down to his rotary fermenters! Locals sadly rue that Bairrada have ostracized him for daring to dream! The irony can be enjoyed in his wines though. The whites begin with the lively and mineral pure Maria Gomes, getting more serious with the Vinhas Velhas old vines blend using Bical, Maria Gomes and Cercealinho, and at the top, the barrel fermented stylish Bical, Vinha Formal. The Baga introduces the reds with a chunky energetic fruit component, the Vinhas Velhas a selected blend of old vines Baga, is perhaps his closest link with tradition and shows an alluring sinewy edge. The single vineyard cuvees Vinha Pan and Barrosa show this variety in its most refined and silky expression.

|Region||The Bairrada region is one of Portugal's most ancient vineyard areas; it was the only part of Lusitania that the Romans found the wine of sufficient quality to be sent back to the Imperial Court in Rome. Now, it offers traditional and modernity. The former encapsulated by baga-based reds, trodden and open fermented, whilst the new now allows international varieties to flourish here too. But whites can be notable, often based upon Bical and Maria Gomes, as well as the region representing the cradle of Portugal's sparkling wine industry.|
